Patch 3.3 = STOP USING VENDOR AMMO

In Patch 3.3, Engineers will (somehow) be gaining recipes for new 91.5 DPS ammo – Iceblade Arrows and Shatter Rounds. The mats for these are near-trivial: Two Crystallized Shadow for the Arrows and two Crystallized Earth for the bullets.

And this is the cardinal reason why I say that you shouldn’t be using vendor ammo (the white 47.5 DPS crap) anymore.

Let us compare prices on Cenarion Circle. I look at my AH right now and see Eternal Earth sitting at 6g per, and Eternal Shadow lazing about at 4.2g per. One Eternal yields 10 Crystallized, which yields 5000 bullets/arrows.

Compare this to the vendor crap, which is 24s per 200 at Exalted, or 1.2g per 1000. 5 stacks of this will set you back 7g… but that’s more money than the 91.5 DPS ammo that you could get from your guild Engineer (if they haven’t all rerolled professions). Plus, a single Eternal Earth is 5 stacks of ammo, but a stack of Earths (20) is a whopping 100 stacks (100,000 shots) of ammo that fits in one bag slot.

Soooo yeah. When 3.3 hits, find an Engineer with the good stuff, make friends, and stop using the vendor shit. Cause while trash DPS is superfluous, why waste money in an effort to save it? :P

If I were you, I would buy up as much eternal earth and eternal shadow as I possibly could, stat. You damn well know the prices for those are going to skyrocket just so people can rip us off.

  • Pike says:

    Oooh.

When I got Talonstrike I dumped all my Mammoth Cutters in the bank (well, my bank alt’s bank) in case I started using a gun again later. Time to go sell ‘em in preparation for an upgrade~

  • Phyllixia says:

Shadows/Earths are more expensive than that on my server – even if the prices stayed the same on the AH, vendor arrows would still be cheaper… and of course the prices will go up when the patch hits. The new ammo is definitely cheap for those mats, though.

Last I checked, ammo still stacks to 1000. So 100k arrows = 100 bag slots. ;)

    Ooooooooo.
I haven’t used vendor ammo in ages. I have a miner, and hubby has an engineer, so I just use the blue stuff for everything. However, I now get to sell all of my ore, if I don’t need to prospect it. More money is always good, especially considering we just put together a chopper, and I financed pretty much all of the vendor parts… and provided the titansteel, and the cobalt for the bolts, and the arctic fur. Oi. At least I get to ride in the sidecar for a change!

Good call, Rilgon. I love how cheap these arrows/rounds are. For me, it’s (almost) free cause I’m a miner (“almost” because there is a cost to using the mats for ammo as opposed to selling them.) Instead of having 2 types of ammo–Timeless for trash and farming, Razorheads for bosses–I can cary just one type and blow shite up. Whee!

Two things I am not happy with, 1. The recipes aren’t available for both engineering specs(Bullets=Goblin, Arrows=Gnomish). 2. Honored rep required for the schematic from a vendor inside IC which most likely means no way outside of a raid will any rep gain be possible. My Shaman alt is a max level goblin engineer. Makes my scopes & ammo for a long time. Now I have to buy it from another engineer that raids? Engineering being such a popular profession for raiders ><

  • TonyRockyHorror says:

Jezritah: The finished ammo would take up 100 bag slots, but the mats themselves would only take up one slot. So, you could basically have nearly unlimited ammo on demand, if you were an engineer or were raiding/questing with an engineer, since the bullets and arrows don’t require an anvil to craft.

As far as using both vendor ammo and crafted? People do that? It’s not like Mammoth Cutters or Saronite Razorheads are cost prohibitive. I don’t want the hassle and wasted bagspace of carrying two types of ammo.

I’ve been stockpiling all the earth and shadow, both crystallized and eternal, that I can get my hands on at below market value. As an engineer, ammo is pretty much the only really consistent moneymaker, so I’m hoping to make a fair chunk of profit on the new stuff once 3.3 hits. I just hope the recipe is vendor-sold or trainer-learned. Going to be a pain in the ass to hve to farm.

  • Criven says:

Don’t celebrate yet. You can make one or other of them, and it requires honored with the Ashen Verdict. That said, here’s hoping my friendly local Engineers can outfit me.

  • Netheral says:

As long as they remove the specialisation requirements I’m happy, sucks not being able to craft your own arrows AND bullets. >.>

  • Shagrat says:

Completely off topic but I’d kill for then to actually make specializations for certain professions (read: leatherworking and blacksmithing) actually meaningful again. There hasn’t been any specialty gear since what…beginning of BC?

  • Oozaru says:

I really think they went the wrong way with this. I think dps progression on ammo should be related to the hunter and not the engineer.

What I mean is raiding engineers will be making this and any hunter, even those who won’t battle the Lich King will be using this thus getting the dps increase.

They should just have let us buy(at a cheap price tag) the ammo once we hit a certain point in Ashen Verdict rep.

  • Maevet says:

fuck yeah. might take me a smidge to get the rep but woot! guss I’ll stop selling myabsurd stock piles

  • rokkitan says:

Actually 5*1.2g = 6g, i.e. Crystallized Shadow or Earth needs to cost 6g or less a piece to be cheaper than vendor ammo. I don’t think it’ll will be.

    And the engineering spesialization stinks.

  • Scripts says:

At least I’ll finally have something to do with all the shadow and earth eternals I’ve been stockpiling on one of my alts…

Too bad there aren’t too many engineers left in my guild, and I’m not keen on powerleveling engineering on my mining/JC toon :(

  • Alaranddl says:

    Rilgon and other smart engineers:

It’s my impression that gnomish eng is more popular than goblin eng. Is this a correct impression on my part, or am I that off?
