Whoa. It’s your voice! /boggles
Sounds good, you sound like a natural! Easy and interesting to listen to :)
Edit: Oh, the death of chain trapping! Urgh!! *shakes fist at Blizzard*
Edit: Oh man, I agree with you about how chain trapping sets good and bad hunters apart. Chain trapping was slightly clunky, but when you did it well, it felt oh so wonderful! Knowing how to handle a mob breaking early was another thing that separated a really good hunter from a good hunter…
Well, I must admit, I was impressed at your podcast.
It was fairly short and sweet, but that’s fine in a one man show, as talking for more than 30 minutes nonstop can be hard with nobody giving you dynamic feedback.
From a technical point of view, it sounded fairly professional. Any leftover background noise after cleaning (or possibly after recording, it’s a matter of your microphone) was eliminated by the wonderful backing music, which managed not to distract from the listening experience.
Regarding the content, I’m not a Hunter (at least not at raids), but you A, make me interested in your class/spec (although that’s not a great feat in and of itself…) and B, have enough general information that I can still get something important out of it in a more immediate sense.
Overall, I’d like to hear more. It was good. ^_^

[Tabard of getting to a Raid on Time] Some of my guildies need to pick one of those up lol.
Anyhoo, great first podcast Rilgon! I say: your concept has definatly been proved =D
PS: Kind of off topic, but I noticed when I had Rapid Killing active, my Chimera Shot tooltip said it dealt 150% of weapon damage instead of the normal 125%, any idea whats going on?
Buh? That I’ve never noticed. It may have to do with the boost from Rapid Killing, but it shouldn’t work like that, it should be a global modifier. o_O;
I’ll have to look into that.
Good in general, sad to hear about the chain trapping thing, seems that survival hunters will become the only ones able to properly chain trap due to the reduced cooldowns?
Try to um and err less, Its hard to do but makes things seem a lot more professional. Oh and assuming you know what your going to talk about then make sure you have the relevant notes available, so know where your loot list is if your going to talk about loot.
Anyway it was good, so well done!
First, nicely done. I look forward to hearing more.
Second, I plan to go back to outlands for one thing at least… I will have two pieces of Beastlords that I carry around with me for their set bonus.
Chain trapping is not dead, we are just going to have to relearn how to do it.
I have no doubt that it will be a harder though. Perhaps I might take an MM/Surv hybrid build for my second spec. Just on the off chance I ever need to crowd control something.

Fantastic! Reminiscent of BRK’s old podcasts. Keep up the good work.
Very nice production values. And you really do sound like that little cartoony draenei, somehow…

Oh, and 100% agreed on chain trapping

Great podcast! Again, because I am neither a hunter nor an end-game player, a lot of this zoomed over my head, but it was still a great listen.

Now that I am home from work and have access to wowhead again I checked out a few things.
With the talent trap mastery (need 8 points in surv to max it) you can increase the duration of your freezing trap to 26 seconds.
With the two piece beast lord set bonus (yes your stats would suffer in a fight requiring chain trapping) of “decreases the cooldown on your traps by 4 seconds” your cooldown would be 26 seconds.
a 26 second cooldown on a 26 second trap tells me we could still pull it off, it would just take more timing.
Well, that and hoping nothing gets resisted, but there is always readiness for that.
Ok, i’ll quit hijacking your thread now.
excellent podcast, make moar pleeze =)

Rilgon….record more podcasts! I require more podcasts! You got out all the 3.2 hunter changes a lot quicker than anything I have read thus far. (and think of all the typing you saved :D)
As far as traps go, I agree I hate that change overall. All you PvP hunters can take your complaints and throw them off a virtual cliff. :D (seriously, why do you have to mess up PvE just so you can trap someone for another few seconds…and yes I am on a PvP server)
Badges – I have been looking for something that gives a hunter take on the badge changes. This podcast beats absolutely everything I have read about 3.2 badge changes period.
Production quality – sounds good to me. Totally natural speaking and no quality issues. Obliviously like you said production notes would be a huge plus but I assume you would be doing that if you decide to continue this.
Yeah, more than likely each post like this would have links to anything I discussed.
Hi Rilgon,
I just finished listening to your proof of concept podcast and overall I’ve got to say I think you’ve got something good here.
The production quality and sound were top notch, and this is very important. The sound quality is clear and you speak very well. I wasn’t sure about the music in the background; at first I hated it but by the end I thought it was working. As long as the music never over-takes with bombast or infectious or super familiar melodies, you’re probably safe to leave it in. But it’s something to proceed with caution on.
I know you have no shortage of content to discuss so that’s hardly a concern, thus, I’d say you’ve got the definite makings of a solid Hunter podcast in the works.
As for critiques and suggestions, I do have a few.
First, I’d recommend having a script or at least some notes to work from. You tended to lose your place a few times and pause in transitions while you organised your thoughts.
Structuring a narrative flow will be a great development but it will take time. But it works better in contrast to a “what next?” sort of approach.
Now, this may not be possible for you but tone down the ego! :p
The “I’m awesome” stuff and tooting your own horn aren’t endearing. Granted, it’s your podcast so if you want to preen then that’s fine, but I know you want to give a more instructional, helpful, guidance-based presentation so focus your efforts on doing that.
The “I’m an awesome player in an awesome guild doing lots of awesome stuff” doesn’t come across well, even if you’re trying in a roundabout way to help (an ‘if I can it so can you’ sort of thing).
The bits where you discussed gear upgrades and Chimera Shot were great. The combination of professional opinion with facts, analysis and perspective are exactly where you should go with this, says I the one listening to you.
I would put less emphasis on yourself in determining if a change to the class is good or not (eg your discussion on traps) but look at the class as a whole the people who play it. By all means let us know why you might agree or disagree with a change but don’t base the determination of whether it’s good or not on your preferences or play style alone. Again, it’s perspective and I think that organising some notes will help the overall presentation and flow.
Anyways, that’s rather enough from me I’d say.
TL;DR version – Good stuff to start, work on honing the presentation and make it more about Hunters and not so much about Rilgon himself.
Looking forward to the transition from episode 0 to 1!
Hmmmmmm…
A few mic fuzzles and poofs on consonants. The speed of the music makes your speech sound very slow and kind of drunk. I would suggest slower music to make yourself sound faster, or just speak a little faster (as some said, a script would help this). Your voice is chill, and chill music should accompany it. A lot of um’s and uh’s, again would be helped with a script.
Pros include content, music volume, good use of vocabulary…
Overall, it’s not bad, but if you tweak the sound a bit and work on your speech (crisper enunciation, a bit faster) I think you could be onto something good.
Also, on second thought, I do agree that it is very “Rilgon-centric”. That’s not necessarily bad, but it depends on what people want to hear. They may want to hear all about you, because you may interest them, but chances are that the majority of people want to know more of the technical mumbo-jumbo. You do tend to talk yourself up a bit, too. =P Modesty is becoming, and will probably get you more respect in the long run.
Keep working!So far, so good.

*keels over laughing*
Man I still remeber that conversation on vent..
Me: “What kind of crystals?”
Rilgon “A-bis crystals..”
Me: “What kind?”
Rilgon: “A-bis….”
Me: *gasping for air laughing* “maybe ‘ah-biss’ crystals.” *snickers more on vent*
Just to play Devil’s Advocate, I didn’t really catch much of an ego from that. The whole bit about being able to chain-trap and still be in the top DPS… like, I can see how that could be construed as being a little too “let me talk of my awesomeness” but on the other hand, it really didn’t have that “air” to it… I have probably said the same thing myself on my blog, perhaps with different wording.
I also gotta admit I liked the “eeesh”es and the other interjections, they added a bit of flavor and character.
I do agree though, a script might be helpful!
Anyways, just my two cents. *nods*

Sound quality, voice fine. You lost me a bit on the music. Maybe talk about it at the beginning or end or direct to a site with links to what you’ve discussed.
Loved the content (finally get the badge changes having read it umpteen times!), but a script or outline would have been less umm,ah.
I like the personality coming thru and the gear advice. Again maybe with notes elsewhere for people to check.
Hope you’ll do more. The shortness was nice. I like the long podcasts, but 1/2 hour was perfect.

You’re voice is great for the radio, so I can see it being a benefit to you.
After reading Lienna’s post, I think that it’s only fair to give you my completely ruthless opinion.
It was a bit long, but only due to lack of planning. A bit more planning on your part would have shortened your podcast a great deal.
In addition, the pace was a bit slow. Like my first try, I said “um” and “hold on” and other such things to pass the time. Don’t do that. If you need to script yourself, do it. It helps a lot when it comes to keeping the pace going at a steady rate.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to be extravagant, over the top, or simply ludicrous. This is the radio, we can’t see your face! We need to hear it instead.
Whatever you do, though, don’t speak any faster than you have to. Be clear and articulate at all costs!
Hope that help!
P.S I liked Jeeves!

Sound a tad nervous :O
Quick Edit: Don’t know if you write a script, but atleast flashcard style quick notes, will EASILY clean up the format =D If you do, study them a tad, just some pointers, I sucked at webradio and the like, and then I magically figured it out by cheating myself and doing a script… then I only had to worry about live interviews =O

Sounded good and having read the previous comments, not much to add. One thing that might take it to less Rilgon centric is perhaps finding a co-host. This will turn it into more of a conversation and with the right person help clarify points some might still not get. You can record using Skype or coordinate recording format info and splice two mp3’s into one.
I personally would avoid a script right away and try for the notecard idea first. Scripting can lead to a sonorous lecturing. Not as fun.
Look forward to more. :)
scrap the script idea and go with a loose outline. back when I used to draw a shitty web comic, my story & art pacing got better when I would use a white board and do a rough frame work then sub outlines for the ideas of each section of a story arch.
@maevet – thats why I said atleast flash cards, I didn’t really mean a well-defined word for word script, more like a cliffnotes for the episode.

Okay, I think I got it now.
Rilgon, why do you hate the fact that motorcycles are not Engineering only and raged for the better part of the beginning of Wrath (and probably still do) when you see non-engineers with them? Is it because they are simply awesome, a just-reward for the pain of leveling and sticking with Engineering, despite what time has thrown at it, and there is no reason why people of the non-profession should attain it? If you think your rage is reasonable and justified, then you know exactly why people are raging about the badge changes. It is the exact same thing.
It doesn’t change anybody’s game the fact that other people get the motorcycle or the epics that were once only attainable to people that raided end game. It still takes “hard work” to get all that money to buy a motorcycle (in fact, I would put it on par with doing 5-mans), and obviously they should get the same reward for it, right?
This is why I sympathized with you when you expressed your frustration over something that should remain a reward. I didn’t think it was fair, and I still don’t. But Blizzard is catering to the demographics, and there is nothing we can do about it but sigh, and move on.

Good stuff :D
1. Drop the music.
2. A bit too long. Cut out the “uh”s.
3. Notes would be awesome. A couple times, you ventured off on to tangents that were hard to follow (i.e. Serpent Sting, Chimera, and Earth and Moon synergy). Organize and focus your thoughts.
4. You don’t have to be modest, just don’t repeat the same thing. I heard a rumor that you might be a capable chain trapper. Is that so? :D
5. I think you should record a clip of you yelling “RAGE INCOMING!” then hotkey it so that when you’re about to rage, we have a warning. Could be fun :D
Overall, a solid first effort. Rough around the edges, but I’ve heard worse.

I’ll play the jerk critic, to help you out. Writing this as I listen. I am writing things directly as they pop into my mind so you can see all my first thoughts. So if they seem mean, don’t be offended please. You have a nice voice for this first off. Don’t put down yourself on the air, as “it may not be as good as others” that looses interest quick.
Good job explaining how traps work rather than just assuming your audience knows what your talking about…and you can do it without carrying on forever. [Good hunters from Mediocre? LOL!]
You sound like you really know the in’s and outs of the Hunter class, which I must be honest from your blog, not something I’ve seen much from you, no offense. I think a podcast is more your calling.
Nice background music. Easy on the bragging though :P I like the fact that your shedding spotlight on heroics and giving them a hunter-ish twist…I like how your not going along with the stream of “this is good, this is bad” that we get from other podcasts/blogs.
I heard “My hard work” like six times….only needs to be said once imo, lol. takes you a few seconds to get back on track when you loose the subject, but that should shorten as you do this more I think.
I wouldn’t tell people to shut up…even if they are laughing at you, lol. Everyone has different pronunciation, so you shouldn’t worry about what people say.
I like the fact that your going into actual details with the argent dailies rather than just saying “new dailies” like a lot of other podcasts. [lol, emblems of epic gems, funny]
Had some trouble with the player btw, just to say, had to download it. Overall, I think this was a very good concept and hope to hear more. I hope you keep the same lighthearted-ness of it as well. There was a few things that could turn disastrous, but I really think those things will improve as you keep on doing this.
Personally, I am really looking forward to the next one, more so than your blog posts, no offense, but I think your a much stronger talker than you are a writer, personally of coarse. You’ve shown me that you know what your talking about as well, which I like. I hope my first thoughts helped, and please don’t take them personally, I did grade those thoughts right after listening to the instance, so they are a bit loaded. Anyhow, good luck and hope to see/hear more.
@Voldenmist, his remark about ‘Maevet shut up’ is a bit of an in-joke (scroll up I left a clif note recap of the vent incident, and appended the 2nd incident involving Draconic for Dummies). I really was laughing hard enough to choke once or twice..
Ah, okay…didn’t hear the Maevet part, just sounded like he was telling the audience to shut up, lol. Maybe should have explained it or not said it, since inside jokes are meant to be errr…inside? Idk, just a thing…read a podcast guide the other day that said something like that…which reminds me…I should try and find it and post it here for Rilgon.
Enjoyed it, even though I don’t play the game anymore. The changes to chain-trapping just make me want to play the game even less.
Oh well, kinda cool to actually hear your voice and I disagree with the people saying ’stop bragging’. Everyone is so concerned about rewarding mediocrity today that it’s good to hear from somebody who worked hard at honing their skills at something and is proud of the fact. Keep doing that.
I for one respect the fact that you constantly strive to improve and challenge yourself. The only people who will be offended by and your pride in your achievements, are people who want everything handed to them on a plate along with a pat on the back as they’re reminded once again how awesome they are. …you know… the people they basically make WoW for now.
Well, Gundersson, everyone can and should be proud of their hard work, but outright bragging is another story entirely. lol You can easily say, “I worked so hard on this and I’m very proud of myself” without saying “and I am the most fucking awesome person on the face of the planet”. =)
Nassira last said something about… PvP Things for PvE, and Other Stories
“without saying “and I am the most fucking awesome person on the face of the planet”.”
I don’t however feel this was the case in the podcast under discussion.
Obviously all things should be moderated by reason and balance.
Gundersson, you’re painting a lot of people with an awfully wide brush and it makes you look more the fool than the people you are essentially calling fools.
Yes, WoW is a heck of a lot easier and accessible than it was in the past, but that is not to say the only people playing revel in mediocrity, do not put practice and effort into honing their skills and do not enjoy a challenge.
Even with the game being easier, you still cannot succeed in end-game content if you don’t know what you’re doing and lack the skills to do what needs to be done, to adapt and to learn tactics.
I am not “offended” by Rilgon’s achievements, I think they’re great and I know he’s a fantastic Hunter. But when I listen to a Hunter podcast, I want discussion of the class, techniques, gear, strategies, class analysis, theory, speculation, humour, congeniality and information, not listening to someone say how great they are. Not that this is all Rilgon does, and as I pointed out in my initial comments, he’s got some great content that I want to hear more of, but just asked him to temper the ego fanning.
That I do not want to hear of a person’s personal exploits does not also mean I am one of the mediocre for whom the game is made. That sort of correlation is just daft, certainly inaccurate and most definitely short sighted
Gundersson,
Didn’t mean to imply that that is how I viewed Rilgon’s cast. Just illustrating the differences between what you alluded to and what actually is. =) Rilgon never said “I am the most fucking awesome person alive”. He just came pretty close. =P Whether or not he IS isn’t the issue at hand.
For instance, I know that Rilgon is NOT the most awesome person alive because he does not answer my tweets and therefore does not love me. >.<
